The Southern Valley of Cusco tour, is an adventure what takes you to the south of Cusco city, following the route to Puno, where you can find Lake Titicaca at the end.
Along this less-visited area, you’ll come across a variety of small, picturesque villages, each known for its unique thing to do. You’ll pass through the land of chicharrón (deep-fried pork meat), the land of the sorcerers (a place where many families practice healing with herbs and predict the future), and the land of bread (known for its delicious bread, locally called chutas). In this region, you’ll also discover ancient archaeological sites coming from over a thousand years ago, as well as temple paintings in frescos representing the consequences of not accepting the religion and conquest.
The tour exploring the Southern Valley of Cusco begins at Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, where you’ll meet our guide. From there, we head south of Cusco, and our first stop is the Tipon Archaeological Site, also known as the Temple of Water. Here, you’ll be amazed by the very sophisticated irrigation system and ancient agricultural terraces come back to the Inca era.
Continuing our journey south, we’ll reach the Pikillaqta Archaeological Site, an ancient city that once belonged to the pre-Inca Waris culture. Its colossal design reflects its role as an urban, administrative, and religious center of its time. From here, you’ll also get panoramic views of the Huacarpay Lagoon wetland, situated in the town of Lucre.
Our final visit takes us to the Andahuaylillas district, home to the San Pedro Apostol de Andahuaylillas Church, often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of America. Constructed in the 17th century, this church has stunning examples of Colonial Art, including golden altars, murals, paintings, and polychrome ceilings.
After this last visit, we’ll return to Cusco, with an estimated arrival time in the city around 3:00 p.m
