There are some trips you just can’t get out of your head, and for me, the full-day trek to the 7 Lagoons of Ausangate is firmly at the top of that list. I’m always searching for those incredible, off-the-beaten-path experiences, and this one is calling my name. It’s more than just a hike; it’s a full-day immersion into the high Andes, a region that feels both wild and deeply spiritual.
What I’m truly craving is the chance to stand in the presence of the legendary Apu Ausangate, the colossal, snow-covered peak that is said to be the guardian of the Cusco region. I can already picture the unforgettable walk through the Vilcanota mountain range, discovering the seven stunning, colorful lagoons one by one. And the perfect finish? Soaking in natural hot springs with epic mountain views. This isn’t just a trek; it’s the ultimate combination of challenging nature, serene beauty, and connecting with the unique culture of the Andes. I can’t wait to make it happen.
My perfect day would have to kick off with a very early start, with a pickup from my hotel in Cusco (elevation: 3,399 m / 11,152 ft) between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. From there, it’s a 3.5-hour drive to the starting point in Pacchanta (elevation: 4,300 m / 14,108 ft), a charming local community nestled at the foot of Apu Ausangate. Seeing the fourth-highest peak in Peru (6,372 m / 20,905 ft) looming in the distance would be the most incredible way to start the day.
Upon arrival, the plan is to fuel up with a hearty group breakfast before kicking off the main adventure. The hike itself is about 5 hours long, and it’s the part I’m most excited about. I’ll get to trace a path that winds past the legendary seven lakes: Puca Cocha, Otorongo Macho, Otorongo Hembra, Alga Cocha, Q’omer Cocha, Azul Cocha, and Pata Cocha. I can’t wait to see the beautiful high-Andean landscape and admire the majestic, snow-capped Ausangate Mountain from every angle, while our professional guide shares fascinating history and facts about the area.
After the trek, we’ll head back to Pacchanta for a well-deserved lunch. And here’s the best part: I’ll have the option to relax and soak in the local hot springs. The thought of soothing my muscles in warm water while gazing at those stunning mountain views is simply perfect.
Finally, we’ll begin the return journey to Cusco, where the tour ends with a drop-off at Plaza Regocijos or Plaza San Francisco, wrapping up what I know will be a truly magical day.
