Faqs

There are several reasons why an excursion to the Reserve Zone is more expensive than to the Cultural Zone. The boat trip is much longer (8h), and the accommodation is in the Reserve Zone. There is a substantial additional entrance fee, to enter the Reserve Zone, which is included in the price.

On our tours and expeditions we have a maximum of 10 people per guide. When we have more than 10 passengers we will use two guides and divide the group in two for walking and expeditions. We do this so you have a higher chance of seeing animals and can hear the guide’s explanation.

We will provide a variety of dishes during your tour, including typical jungle food and drinks. Meals will include fish, chicken, beef, vegetables and fruit. Drinks during the tour will include natural juices such as pineapple, star fruit, passion fruit, coffee and hot chocolate. We can also provide vegetarian and vegan food, and cater for food allergies, please contact us before starting the tour if you have any special dietary requirements.

On sunny days the temperature varies from 25 to 40 ° C during the day and from 10 to 20 ° C at night. June and July are the coldest month. We will inform you of current weather conditions before leaving on a tour.

We have 2 lodges in the cultural zone of Manu National Park.

Rainforest Lodge located at 900 msl , has double and twin rooms, shared bathrooms and showers, dining room, kitchen and sun loungers. There is electricity available in the rooms, lighting and charging batteries.

Bonanza Ecological Reserve located in the lowland area, at 445 meters above sea level . The hostel has double and twin rooms, shared bathrooms and showers, dining room, kitchen, two platforms for tents, hammocks and sun loungers, we also have double rooms with private bathroom and shower, available for an additional fee.

Electricity is available in the light rooms and facility to charge batteries is available in the dining room, electricity is from solar panels so availability depends on weather.

The reason we stay here is to see wildlife, next to this house there is a large muddy area where many animals come to eat mineral clay, during the day and night, it is around 11m from the ground, in the jungle primary, 1 hour walk from the main hostel.

The camouflage house has mosquito nets and mattresses, we do not have sanitary facilities here, in order to protect the natural area.

When you want to use the bathroom you must go down from the house, use a machete to make a hole and then cover, not with paper, all our garbage that we have to take back to the hostel and Cusco.

We have 2 metal observation towers, 18 m and 16 m giving you the opportunity to see the jungle from the top of the canopy, see birds and see the jungle.

Our trips require you to be in good physical health, but the form depends on the itinerary you choose. The areas where we walk are flat. We always walk very slowly in the jungle, as it is the best way to observe the flora and fauna, but also because it can be very hot and humid. If you take one of our tours, then you will be walking 3 to 4 hours per day, carrying only a small day pack to carry your water, binoculars and camera. You will return to our comfortable Lodge . Our 6 day trip involves walking for 6 hours or more and carrying your tent, sleeping bag, etc. All evening walks are optional; If you are tired you are welcome to stay at the Lodge .

Please contact us by email for reservations. We will then send you an email detailing how to make a reservation and payment methods. To secure your reservation, we require a minimum deposit of 15% (USD) of the total cost per person. You can deposit through Western Union or Visa, or put the deposit in our Peruvian bank account. Travel Guide

In this travel guide we will tell you about the Manu National Park, the most biodiverse place on the planet. It is located in the Peruvian Amazon and you can visit it from the city of Cusco. If you like the idea of entering the virgin jungle and admiring an infinite world of sounds and animals, then this is the place for you.

Manu Biosphere Reserve

In total, the Manu National Park is home to almost 2 million hectares of nature. It is located on the western edge of the Amazon basin, in the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios and since 1977 it has held the status of Biosphere Reserve granted by UNESCO. The tropical forests of Manu have allowed ecological and evolutionary processes to take place almost without the presence of man, however, there is also enormous cultural wealth in the area, represented by the current indigenous populations with different levels of contact with the outside world.

In the Manu National Park there are 222 species of mammals, 1005 species of birds, 155 species of amphibians and 132 species of reptiles. Here it is possible to find the entire variety of ecological floors that exist in the Amazon, from the low jungle, the Amazonian plain and even the cloud forests of the high jungle. All this in a setting of impressive diversity of vegetation, and in a single hectare of Manu up to 250 species of trees have been found.

The best time to visit Manu National Park

The best time to visit Manu is in Cusco’s dry season; Between May and October is when you can avoid the most rainy days. During the rainy season, especially January and February, the fall of water causes the flow of the rivers to increase, which often block the roads and make travel extremely difficult.

Hiring a tour: The safest option to get there is hiring a tour to the Manu National Park from Cusco. Apart from not having to worry about where to go and having adequate vehicles to navigate the difficult paths into the jungle, the tours work with multi-day itineraries that include accommodation, meals and activities such as ziplining, canopy, hiking and horse riding . boat. In addition, the tours stop at specific places on the route where urban transportation does not. One of these stops is in the cloud forest, where it is possible to observe the fascinating courtship dance of the Cock of the Rock.

The Manu is divided into two management categories for tourists: the cultural zone and the reserved zone. There is also the intangible zone, but this is only enabled for scientific expeditions.

Cultural zone of the Manu National Park

The cultural zone acts as a buffer area to the National Park, in this area there are settlements, towns and in general a greater human presence. If you want to go to Manu on your own, and without hiring a tourist service, then you can only access the cultural zone. Although this space does not have the rich biodiversity of the reserved or intangible area, it is a great way to save money and still experience the power of the jungle.

What to do in the cultural zone: From Pilcopata you can walk to the Santa Rosa de Huacaria community . The walk lasts approximately two hours and in Santa Rosa you can have lunch and then swim in a river surrounded by vegetation. 100% recommended is to take transportation to Atalaya, located in front of the Madre de Dios River and from where you can hire boat rides and take walks through the jungle. You can get to Atalaya from Pilcopata in a shared taxi (10 soles per person) or in a private motorcycle taxi (60 soles).

Beyond Atalaya is Salvación, a charming town within the Manu cultural zone, where you can find delicious Amazonian food, such as the famous chicken broth, in local restaurants. In Salvación there is also the Cocha Machuwasi , a small lake surrounded by swampy vegetation and a natural refuge for more than a thousand species of birds. You can cross the lake on wooden rafts and then walk for a couple of hours along the surrounding trails.

Reserved area of the Manu National Park

The reserved area is where the real magic happens. To get here you can only do it by hiring a tour with an authorized tourism agency, at Denomades we have a tour to the reserved area of the Manu National Park. The pristine state of nature in the reserved area allows the existence of extreme biodiversity, where its lush forests hide endangered species such as: the black caiman, the spectacled bear and the giant river otter.

What to do in the Manu reserved area

The Denomades tour includes extensive navigations along the Madre de Dios River, where it is possible to observe birds such as the heron, the kingfisher and the jungle condor. From the boat it is very likely to observe jaguars bathing on the river bank, as well as groups of turtles, white caimans and the giant river otter. There are also night and afternoon walks, with explanations from an expert guide about the tropical forest. The tour lasts 6 days and includes transfers, accommodation and food.

You can tailor our tours to your preferences, and they re available every day of the year! Our team of travel experts is here to assist you with enthusiasm.
