Let’s be honest, walking with fluffy alpacas and llamas in the Andes has to be the ultimate cottage-core wish, right? This is an experience that has been firmly on my must-visit list for what feels like forever. It’s not just about getting that perfect, picturesque photo (though I absolutely plan to). It’s the whole idea of immersing myself in these incredible landscapes, from the stunning shores of a high-altitude lagoon to a path once trodden by the Incas.
I’m truly craving a chance to connect with an authentic local culture. The thought of exploring the Chinchero community, meeting its people, and seeing their world up close is what travel is all about for me. This one-day tour feels like the perfect way to do just that.

The Experiences I’m Most Excited For
Tea by the Piuray Lagoon: The day kicks off with a tea reception right by the Piuray Lagoon (elevation: 3,700 meters / 12,140 feet) in the community of Cuper Bajo, Chinchero. I can just picture it: a tranquil, serene moment with a cup of comforting tea made from native plants, surrounded by those vast, stunning mountain landscapes. It sounds like the perfect, calm start to a magical day.
Hiking with Llamas and Alpacas: This is the main event! For me, the journey is just as important as the destination. It’s more than just a walk; it’s about connecting with the cultural heart of the Andes. Llamas and alpacas have been vital to indigenous cultures for centuries, and I can’t wait to spend a few hours walking alongside them, feeling like a part of the wild landscape rather than just a visitor.
An Outdoor Picnic with Organic Products: After working up an appetite, a picnic lunch featuring local, organic products sounds absolutely perfect. The thought of dining outdoors with a majestic view of the Sacred Valley, tasting fresh Andean cheese, sweet native corn, and freshly made guacamole… it’s a sensory experience I’m truly craving. This isn’t just a meal; it’s part of the adventure.
The Chinchero Inca Archaeological Complex: I’m a huge history buff, so getting my history fix at the Chinchero Inca Archaeological Complex (elevation: 3,762 meters / 12,343 feet) is a definite highlight. I’m fascinated by places that reveal layers of history, and this site, with its colonial temple built directly on top of pre-existing Incan foundations, is the ultimate example. Seeing those impressive agricultural terraces and intricately assembled stone walls in person will be incredible.
Traditional Textile Demonstration: To round it all out, the tour includes a visit to a local family for a traditional textile demonstration. Chinchero’s textiles are legendary. I’m so excited to see the vibrant craftsmanship up close, understand the ancient techniques, and witness how these beautiful traditions are kept alive. It feels like such an authentic way to appreciate the local culture.
Morning: Welcome and a Lakeside Hike
The day begins bright and early with an 8:00 AM pickup from my accommodation in Cusco (elevation: 3,399 meters / 11,152 feet), which is super convenient if you’re staying near the Plaza de Armas. By 9:00 AM, we’ll be in Cuper Bajo, Chinchero, for that welcome tea by the picturesque Piuray Lagoon. Then, it’s time for the main event: a fascinating hike of approximately 3 hours. I’m looking forward to just soaking it all in—the rural atmosphere, spotting flocks of sheep and local birds, all with my new llama and alpaca friends in tow.
Afternoon: Picnic, Forests, and History
Around noon, after the hike, we’ll settle in for that delicious picnic lunch at a campsite with what I’m told are majestic views over the Sacred Valley. Post-lunch, the journey continues through a charming and fragrant eucalyptus and queuñas forest. After the forest walk, we’ll dedicate time to exploring the impressive Chinchero Inca Archaeological Complex. I plan to up the step count wandering through the terraces and ceremonial plazas before we stroll through the village’s alleys to visit a traditional family home for that much-anticipated textile demonstration.
Evening: Return to Cusco
The day winds down with a return trip to Cusco, arriving around 4:00 PM. It sounds like an absolutely perfect, enriching day that seamlessly combines nature, culture, and local tradition.
